Inroduction

If I had to decide between the Douglas 4-engine propliners and the Lockheed Constellation series I would favour the DCs.

I learned to like the lines of DCs in the book 86 Flugzeug-Typen [1] which I got at the age of about twelve. I remeber having been impressed by the photo of an Iberia DC-4 were a man is standing beside that big single front wheel .

I could somehow capture similar settings on a freight run from Miami to the Bahamas in 1989, where I flew on the jumpseat outbound and in the empty cabin back to Miami ( see pictures Aerial Transit Company).

I still remember that pleasant smell of exhaust fumes of aviation gas, which seeped into the cabin through the window frames :-) .
